Description

The L298 is an integrated monolithic circuit in a 15-lead Multiwatt and PowerSO20 packages. It is a high voltage, high current twin full-bridge driver that accepts conventional TTL logic levels and drives inductive loads such as relays, solenoids, DC, and stepping motors. There are two enable inputs to enable or disable the device independently of the input signals.

Applications

  • POWER OUTPUT STAGE
    The L298 has two power output stages (A ; B). The power output stage has a bridge arrangement, and depending on the state of the inputs, its outputs can drive an inductive load in common or differential mode. The current that travels through the load exits the bridge at the sense output; an external resistor (RSA ; RSB.) allows the strength of this current to be detected.

 

  • INPUT STAGE
    Each bridge is powered by four gates, the inputs of which are In1; In2; EnA and In3; In4; EnB. When the En input is high, the In inputs set the bridge state; when the En input is low, the bridge is inhibited. The inputs are all TTL compatible.

 

  • SUGGESTIONS
    A non-inductive capacitor, typically of 100 nF, must be planned for between both Vs and Vss, to ground, as close to the GND pin as practicable. When the power supply's huge capacitor is too far away from the IC, a second, smaller capacitor near the L298 must be planned for. The sense resistor, which must not be wire wrapped, must be grounded at the negative pole of Vs, which must be close to the GND pin of the I.C.
